BRITISH RED CROSS

Fire Victim Support Service

This is a service provided by the British Red Cross in partnership with the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It is crewed by Red Cross volunteers. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control will call out the service, on the request of the officer in charge at the scene of a domestic incident.

The service will be available between 1900 hours to 0700 hours seven days a week with twenty four hours cover at weekends and bank holidays. This should cover the periods that cause difficulty for the social services and local housing departments.

Fire Victims Support Services mobility is provided by a Fiat Ducato based mobile home, which is fitted out with hot water, shower, cooker, and a heater. It will give respite care to those who have suffered from domestic fire or flooding. Further items are carried, such as change of clothes, footwear, baby items, and a camera for the clients to take photographs for insurance purposes. A mobile phone will be available for people to contact friends or family. Even dog leads will be on the vehicle. However probably most important of all are the volunteers who provide both practical and emotional support to the victims of the incident at a critical time.

On being mobilised the British Red Cross requires the Fire Victim Support Service to be in attendance within 90 minutes, this should make the service of use in making appliances available earlier and getting fire crews away from incidents more rapidly.
